Library or Home Office

Claire Paquin: Clean Design Partners

Location: Eastchester

The goal for this home office was to give the homeowners and their children a space equally conducive to doing work and homework or to relaxing and reading a book. The husband wanted a more traditional design, while the wife wanted the space to be fun and funky. The result is a mix. For example, custom built-ins by Henry Agudelo Architectural Woodworking were done in walnut, giving the space an Old World library feel, while metallic linen wallpaper, a large, tufted slipper chair, and custom swirl rug are quite modern.

Location: Hastings-on-Hudson

The inspiration for this project came from the beautiful Federal bones of the house itself and the husband’s appreciation of industrial buildings and equipment. A dynamic tension developed by furnishing light fixtures and side tables in almost brutish, industrial materials. This project included the installation of built-ins by Hudson Cabinetry Design, the fabrication of window seats and treatments, a redesign of the fireplace mantel and surround, and the addition of new furnishings.

The standout feature of this library and home office is the rich mahogany used throughout. A rigid grid of beams frames the ceiling fixture and creates interest. In the office, built-ins frame the windows; in the library, bookshelves line three walls and house a large book collection. The floor plan allows for ample furniture but also creates a cozy and inviting feel.
