EDP’s Big Giveaway Heats Up

 Wine and Food Weekend

I’m going to admit something embarrassing. I am a huge intellectual snob. I love nothing more than drooping around in black, whining cryptically about “signs” and “signifiers.” Sadly, I floated the idea, and those in charge won’t let me pose questions about semiotics—so here we are again this week, asking really easy questions for cool Westchester Magazine’s Wine & Food Weekend stuff.

This week, I’m auctioning off a dozen cupcakes from Flour & Sun Bakery, the chic Pleasantville cupcake palace with an honest-to-God “cupcake menu.” Flour & Sun (along with Birdsall House, Crabtree’s Kittle House, Tarry Lodge, Restaurant North and, basically, every other great restaurant in Westchester) will be participating in WM’s Wine & Food Weekend at the Ritz-Carlton, Westchester. In the coming weeks, the prizes get even crazier, with baskets of free wine, free beer, and even tickets to the Weekend, and culminate in a Grand Prize that offers an all access pass for two to the entire weekend’s events (that’s worth over $1000 in tickets) AND an overnight stay at the glamorous Ritz-Carlton, Westchester hotel. Holy party!

Flower & Sun Cupcakes (but if you win EDP’s Big Giveaway this week, ,you get a dozen)

Okay, kids—put your thinking caps on. For a dozen of those sexy, Flour & Sun cupcakes (with so much icing you can practically ski them), answer this question: What kiss-and-bitch HBO television show ran from 1998 until 2004, and is credited by many with reigniting America’s love affair with cupcakes? Post your answer in the comments section of EDP by noon, Friday, May 13—and sadly, employees of Westchester Magazine and its affiliates are not eligible for prizes (which really sucks, BTW).

Tartufo Nero (or, You Had Us at Truffles)

The new’za in town: Serafina in White Plains

Oh, they’re doing everything right at this new Italian in White Plains, from the “00” Neapolitan flour to the fresh mozzarella made that day in Italy, San Marzano tomatoes, prosciutto di Parma, and Parmigiano Reggiano. We loved Serafina’s creamy risottos and crisp margheritas, but this newbie (one of 10 outlets opened or planned) stole our heart with a fragrant ode to the most delicious fungus. Serafina’s “tartufo nero” is baked in an oven lined with vocanic rock from Vesuvio, and lands graced with Robiola, fontina, truffle cheese, truffle oil, and a sprinkling of sliced black truffles. Sure, it’s $29—and feeds only one—but it smells like a funky sort of heaven, and is one of the best pizzas around.
