Of all the taste tests we’ve done, I don’t think we’ve ever been as excited as we were for chocolate chip cookies. We sampled cookies from eight local bakeries (sometimes, our jobs are so hard) and the number one consensus: there are a lot of good cookies in the county. Cookies that elicited comments like “DAAAMN” and “Bonkers.” Cookies that we loved for their chewy texture. And cookies that blew us away with melting, gooey chocolate.
We judged each cookie on its texture and flavor (sweetness, flavor of the dough, and amount of chocolate), and, in the end, came up with five that we could easily eat over and over again (if we also joined a gym).
Fifth Place: The Dessertist, Croton-on-Hudson (163 points)
Owner Samantha Eichenberg spent four years developing this recipe to become “the mom who makes the best chocolate chip cookies.” We were big fans of her classic cookies for their “balanced, delicious, almost nutty taste” and “cooked just right” texture.
Fourth Place: Market North, Armonk (168.5 points)
If you’ve been to Restaurant North, you’ve probably had the “Super Awesome” chocolate chip cookie baked in mini cast iron skillet. At Market North, Chef Eric Gabrynowicz is taking that same recipe and transforming it into a giant, “Super Awesome” cookie. This “wildly indulgent” cookie is light on the chocolate, but we loved the rich butter and vanilla notes, and “crunchy on the ends, soft on the inside” texture.
Third Place: Lulu Cake Boutique, Scarsdale (173.5)
In case you didn’t know, this cake bakery also makes cookies—massive, manhole-size cookies full of chocolate chips, nuts, and puddles of gooey caramel. If you’re into simplicity, this probably isn’t the cookie for you, but we had no problem devouring them. “The caramel is like cheating,” remarked one taster, but “this is one of the best ever.”
Second Place: Beascakes, Armonk (177.5 points)
Chocoholics stop whatever you’re doing and make your way to Beascakes immediately! This “crazy good” cookie is so “loaded with chocolate goodness” that the dough seems like it’s just there to hold the chocolate in place.
First Place: sherry b dessert studio, Chappaqua (178 points)
Only half a point separated second place and our winner. These chewy cookies struck all the right notes—“very chocolatey,” “perfect softness,” and “a little crunch.” All we need is a glass of milk.
