Westchester’s Prettiest Bakery Makes Stellar Cakes

In the market for a colorful unicorn cake for your kid’s next party?  Flowerbake by Angela has got you covered. Can’t decide where to meet your friend, mom, sister, or even that stylish client with a serious sweet tooth? Might we suggest Flowerbake by Angela. Is it Tuesday and you’re in need of a cupcake? Flowerbake by Angela is still the answer. Honestly, we’ll take any excuse to head to this Pelham bakery where the vibe is Molly Yeh meets HGTV and the baked goods are moist, the frosting is silky, and the ingredients are topnotch.

Owner Angela Scalamogna opened this stylish cake boutique in February, transforming two former storefronts into an airy, can’t-wait-to-hang-out-here space with painted pressed tin ceilings, light-and-bright white walls, plenty of natural light, cozy benches, and a bold floral mural. The coffee for little shots of espresso and summer-ready iced coffee is imported from her husband’s native Italy.

The Adagio teas are perfumed with red berries and white peach. And shelves stock all kinds of stylish, party-ready items from marble birthday candles and metallic cake toppers to pineapple cookie cutters and gold-rimmed flamingo-print paper plates.

But first and foremost, Flowerbake by Angela is a place to grab some cake. Most orders like the aforementioned unicorn cakes (“We make at least one a week,” says Scalamogna) are custom and require several days’ notice. Or drop in anytime for a small selection of cupcakes in rotating flavors like coconut, Champagne, chocolate chip cookie dough, chocolate brownie, and a supremely moist vanilla.

“I’ve had this hobby for about five years,” says Scalamogna, who started baking from home for fun. “I was always good with crafts and I’m a self-taught cake decorator. I started baking for friends, and [demand] got a little out of hand, so I decided to open a cake boutique.”

To make cakes that taste as great as they look, Scalamogna puts the emphasis on ingredients. “We get organic unbleached flour, organic or cage-free eggs, and good local butter,” she says. “It really makes a difference in the way the cakes taste. We’ve been open for five months now, and people really comment on that.” In keeping with the bakery’s name, some frostings incorporate floral ingredients like lavender or rosewater.

In the back a party room, Scalamogna puts her events background to good use, organizing cake- and cookie-decorating parties for birthdays and other occasions. (There’s even a weeklong kids’ baking camp.)

“I love my little bakery and people in Pelham are being very supportive,” says Scalamogna, who hopes other communities will also come to appreciate Flowerbake by Angela. “People would love this place, but they just don’t know about.”
