Thrive Dining Brings Easy-to-Eat Meals to This Retirement Community

Tuckahoe-based The Fountains at RiverVue introduces a way for residents with physical and cognitive challenges to have nutritious meals with restored independence.

At The Fountains at RiverVue, a retirement community in Tuckahoe, Thrive Dining has been introduced as a way for residents who have challenges due to their age to feel less anxious when it comes to mealtime.

Favorite foods such as chef salad, beef Wellington, breaded sole, and ham and cheese eggs can be enjoyed without utensils, assistance, or distractions, allowing for food to be enjoyed with friends and family. Food goes through a process of grinding and binding, to be served in bite-sized portions. Thrive Dining ensures proper nutrition and better digestion to prevent unintended weight loss, and also gives residents a choice in what they want to eat, restoring independence.

“All the vegetables, protein, and starch go into a grinder, which is then prepared by our Thrive Dining chef,” said Claudette Rutty, the food director at The Fountains, adding that it is the vegetables that bind the food; there is no flour or breadcrumbs involved.

Upon sitting down to taste some of the food offered, raspberry sorbet and a warm towel scented with lavender were given to guests before utensils were cleared from the table. This sets up a routine for mealtime, which stimulates the appetite. Some residents, especially with dementia, may not even realize that they are hungry at times.

Ann Marie Furnari of Hartsdale, whose husband has been in the memory care facilities at The Fountains for three years, says that he enjoys Thrive Dining, particularly for breakfast. “It seems like [residents] do better with routine,” she said. “The towel and the sorbet just sets them up to get ready to eat.”

On the last Thursdays of July and August — July 27 and August 31 — you can give Thrive Dining a try, during a chef demonstration and luncheon. RSVP at 914.357.8278 at least two days prior.
