If small cabins and furniture made entirely of wood is your idea of cozy, you’ll find sanctuary at the Little Cabin Sandwich Shop. With wooden signs, countertops, tables, and even serving platters, the shop screams “homey” to the hungry customers that enter the door.
Inspired by his father for the theme, owner Stephen Brophy did much of the carpentry work himself. “It’s almost like a little getaway when you get in here and it’s a warm, inviting feeling” Brophy explained. “That’s what we hope it is for everybody.”
Freshly cooked sandwiches made with in-house meat add an artisan feel to the shop. “As far as the menu goes, we kind of pick mostly the classic sandwiches — the Rueben, the Cuban…” Brophy says, adding that no commercial cold cuts are brought into the shop. The turkey Reuben grilled on multigrain bread contains house-roasted turkey breast and Swiss cheese, topped with mouth-watering sauerkraut and homemade Russian dressing. The Little Cabin Cuban is made with pulled pork, house-cured bacon, house-made mayo, Swiss cheese, pickles, and whole-grain mustard.
A man of many trades, Brophy’s work does not only extend to the carpentry. He and his wife Mariana, co-owner, do much of the cooking themselves. The couple open up shop at 6 a.m. and close at 5 p.m., grateful that the business hours allow them to arrive home for dinner and spend time with family.
Since opening in July 2017, Brophy has built a smoker behind the shop where the staff smokes meats such as the pulled pork and bacon. The Brophys cure their own meat as well, including pastrami, corn beef, and more.
Sauces, condiments, dressings, and beverages are made from scratch, inspired by traditional recipes like the Ecuadorian horchata, a sweetened beverage made of rice, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
While finding reasonably priced locally sourced ingredients has been a challenge, Brophy enthusiastically notes the shop staff makes dishes from locally sourced goods when they are in-season, such as watermelon juice.
Ultimately, the family theme seeps throughout shop, from the cozy environment, to the dishes made with fresh ingredients, care and love, to the cooks behind the food. “It’s all family,” Brophy mentioned. “It’s all kind of hands-on and learned from experience.”
