When brothers Ciro and Martin Priego planned to open a new restaurant in Westchester, they wanted to give their eatery a name that would resonate with potential new customers. “We wanted to go with something people would recognize, and that they were familiar with,” says Ciro, who along with his brother, also owns Tijuana Mexican Grill in Sleepy Hollow. The result is Tabasco Grill & Deli, a new Ossining eatery that shares its name with the southern Mexico state and, of course, the famous hot sauce brand.
Open since September in the former KFC building at 134 South Highland Avenue, the Tex-Mex deli features a set-up similar to its sister restaurant. Think Chipotle, with build-your-own burritos and a counter featuring a range of meats, sauces, and toppings. “Here we have more options and more business because we’re on a busy street,” says Ciro, noting that popular dishes include steak burritos, chorizo tacos, and chicken wings in flavors like chipotle-barbecue and honey-pineapple-habañero. “People love the wings. They’re definitely our most popular [dish].”
Other choices range from a handmade quesadilla filled with cheese and zucchini blossoms to an albondiga sandwich that pairs Mexican meatballs with tomato sauce and queso fresco. On a recent visit, the restaurant’s rotating list of specials included an outstanding torta Cubana with Swiss cheese, sweet-and-smoky pulled pork, and thick slices of ham. Breakfast options include a morning quesadilla, huevos rancheros, and even pancakes. Late-night offerings are also available, as the eatery keeps the lights on until midnight.
Ciro says he’s pleased with the community response in Ossining. Business has been so good, in fact, that the he and his brother are already eyeing a second Tabasco eatery. “We’re thinking of opening another one in Mount Kisco,” Ciro says before quickly adding, “But we’re okay with this one for now.”
