This New Coffeeshop Proves Peekskill Is Getting Hipper by the Minute

Local roasts, pastries, and dairy in a historic setting.

Kurzhals Coffee has opened its doors at The Peekskill Central Market, one of the latest businesses at the recently renovated retail/performance venue. One of the oldest masonry buildings in Westchester dating back to 1836, 900 Main Street‘s previous iterations include a telegraph office, a Union soldier recruitment center, a hardware/gun-smithing shop, and a glass company.

Abandoned for about 20 years and fallen into disrepair until 2012, when Gabriel Arango, who also owns nearby Iron Vine, purchased the 15,200-square-foot building. After a gut renovation (including fixing up an 1870-era theater on the third floor that can seat almost 100 people), the building is becoming a new retail hub and community enter.

Named after one of the space’s previous residents (Kurzhals Hardware), Kurzhals Coffee prides itself on the use of local ingredients. Dairy is from Hudson Valley Fresh, Rockland Bakery provides the bagels and pastries, and ethically sourced coffee hails from two local small-batch roasters, Big Bang Coffee Roasters and PATH Coffee Roasters. They also blend their own chai, which can be enjoyed as either a plain tea or latte and offer a variety of Harney & Sons Tea.

Also on the menu is a selection of breakfast and lunch options, such as their Tally Me Banana (bananas, almond butter, cinnamon, honey, and chia on multigrain bread) and The Nelson Avenue (Black Forest Ham, cheddar, pickles, and red eye gravy mayo). Keeping with the community spirit, the walls of the shop are adorned with paintings that can be purchased, adding even more charm to this little shop. A new kitchen is under construction and they will be expanding their menu in the near future.
