Ask anyone who has been to Nantucket if they are familiar with Something Natural and the response will be a resounding “Yes!” The iconic sandwich shop has garnered a true cult following amongst both locals and tourists since it opened its doors in 1970. Now, after nearly 50 years on the island, Something Natural is ready to bring a little taste of the island to Greenwich and beyond.
The popular sandwich shop and bakery has set up its second location in a charming building off Greenwich Avenue. “This space was dated back to 1870,” says Molly Hirschel, one of the co-owners of the second location. “It used to be a carriage house to the mansion that is now Saks Fifth Avenue.”

If customers want to grab-and-go, the shop has a fridge stocked with pre-made sandwiches, salads, parfaits, and more. Also worth mentioning are the tubs of raw cookie dough, which people often come in and buy as gifts for friends and family. Taking up most of the fridge, though, is a line of iced teas and lemonades created by Something Natural founder Matt Fee. The Something Natural Beverage line is made with organic ingredients, quality teas, fresh fruit purée, and real cane sugar. A must try is the “Matt Fee Tea,” a red herbal tea steeped with hibiscus, mint, and sugar. This tea proved so popular that it was the driving force in starting a line of bottled beverages.

The Greenwich space has a clean design, accented simply with charming wooden beams. Despite making many of their offerings in-house, the store smells bright and airy, not overwhelmingly liked baked goods. Guests place their sandwich or salad orders towards the back of the house, in front of an open kitchen space staffed by friendly employees who are more than eager to help.

One of the more popular sandwiches is Sheila’s Favorite, a layering of Swiss cheese, mayo, pickles, carrots, and tomatoes on oatmeal bread. Its tangy, crunchy profile makes for the perfect lunch on a warm summer day. Also worth mentioning is the roast beef, which is roasted in-house and absolutely tastes like it.
In Nantucket, it’s customary for tourists to stop in before leaving the island and pick up a couple of loaves of the Portuguese bread, one of Something Natural’s most popular offerings. While it’s less necessary now that there’s a Something Natural location close by, it’s still totally worth grabbing a loaf (or two) for the road.
