In June, long-time friends and restaurant owners Antonio Mauro (and Sammy Reyes opened Sofia’s Italian Bistro in the space that was formerly Mamaroneck’s Lum Yen. It’s the second Italian restaurant for the pair — they also own La Vela Dining & Bar in Manhattan — who felt it was time to expand to the suburbs with the help of Mauro’s wife, Claudia, and sister-in-law, Antonella Iaccarino, who serves as the restaurant’s manager.
It’s definitely a family affair. “My sister has been working in Mamaroneck for over twenty years and has become familiar with the area,” explains Iaccarino, adding that their father always dreamt of having a family restaurant. “My father never succeeded in opening a restaurant, so helping makes [him] feel good.”
The food is classic Italian with mushroom risotto, linguini in white clam sauce, eggplant rollatini, fillet of sole, and fettucini carbonara among the most popular dishes. But the signature is the authentic Neapolitan pies, something Antonio, who grew up in Naples, knows all about. True to style, the pies are super thin and made with simple ingredients like fresh tomatoes, milky mozzarella, housemade burrata, arugula, white truffles, and imported prosciutto di Parma.
Of course, there’s always room for dessert. You’re going to want to try their zeppole, light spheres of fried dough sprinkled with sugar and served with Nutella. There’s also a decadent chocolate soufflé topped with scoop of gelato and a traditional tiramisù.
At lunch, the restaurant serves up gourmet panini with fillings like grilled veggies, prosciutto and fig, and sausage and broccoli rabe. There’s also a kid-friendly menu. No surprise since the mantra here seems to be family, a formula we’re sure will help this city team’s success carry into Westchester.
