Two months ago, Walter’s Hot Dog Stand cloned itself by unleashing a food truck onto Westchester’s streets. And since Westchester isn’t exactly urban, their concept takes a more on-demand approach to the mobile food-vending model: Book the truck for events or lunch in your office parking lot, and it rolls up to dish out the same hot dog-centric menu on offer at the brick-and-mortar location.
Well, Longford’s, another iconic Westchester summertime mainstay with locations in Rye and Old Greenwich, is following suit, spinning off a so-called Mobile Scoop Shoppe. And before you balk about another ice cream truck…
“This is not bells and whistles and door-to-door stops,” says Bobby Vitz, who operates the truck. “It’s a gourmet ice cream shop on wheels,” he says, and it proffers the same made-daily ice cream that Longford’s is known for. Like Walter’s, you can book it for events like parties or corporate gatherings. The cost is $150 to get the truck on site, and then there are four packages to choose from. One, for example, buys you an hour of service and costs $4.50 per person for a small cup or cone with sprinkles. Another fetches an hour of unlimited service at menu prices ($3.50 for a small and up). All require a minimum of 25 people to reserve.
One item that’s sure to keep the Scoop Shoppe busy this summer: the donut sandwich. Yes, donut ice cream sandwiches (ice cream stuffed between two glazed donuts, with toppings) are marauding through Westchester’s streets maybe even as you read this, waiting to be devoured. That’s probably enough to grab your attention, but there are also shakes, floats, and sundaes for more traditional folks.
