There are salad bars, sushi bars, oyster bars, cupcake bars, coffee bars; in fact, with a certain level of traveling in the Great Food World, you’ll encounter a litany of fun stations devoted to a specific food item. Every so often, even a practiced culinary traveler will come upon something he hadn’t experienced before.
This happened to me at DeCicco & Sons in Armonk on November 25 passing the bakery department on my way to the dairy section: a cannoli bar. It’s really just a small area atop the main bakery display case with a couple clear containers of cannoli shells, 8 jars showcasing colorful toppings, and a sign describing a three-step ordering process: Choose Your Shell (Plain or Chocolate); Choose Your Size (Small or Large); and, here comes the most exhilarating part, Choose Your Toppings (Chopped Hazelnuts, Traditional Candied Orange Peels, Chopped Pistachios, Chocolate Chips, Crushed Oreos, Crushed Biscoff Cookies, Peanut Butter Chips, and Fruity Pebbles).

Cannoli (for those living under two rocks and never had one), are the most famous dessert to come out of Sicily, essentially “little tubes” of sugared ricotta piped into a shell of fried pastry dough. DeCicco’s versions are done expertly, a creamy, not-overly-sweet filling in a crunchy/flaky shell. The filling-to-shell ratio is on point, and the orange peels and pistachio varieties were the favorite among my group of sweet-meisters.
And unless you’re six, don’t embarrass yourself and get the Fruity Pebbles — unless nobody else is waiting at the bakery counter with you.
