Why it’s great: The three young scions of the family that founded the Westchester/Rockland DeCicco Markets dynasty—Joe and his cousins, brothers Chris and John—all share a passion for beer. The trio used the unglamorous fact that they were born into a supermarket family to launch themselves as heavy players in the local beer world. Look for the 10 DeCicco stores in Westchester and Rockland to carry between 400 and 1000+ beers each. Meanwhile, several of the DeCicco stores (Pelham, Harrison, Ardsley, Armonk, Cornwall, and Brewster) offer taps for growler fills. And two of the DeCicco Markets (Armonk and Brewster) actually offer craft-beer bars on the premises, which means that you can catch a buzz before doing your weekly shopping. The new Armonk DeCicco is located next to Fortina and offers 28 taps for growler refills or for just hanging around drinking. Look for the DeCicco boys to collaborate with several local brewers including Sixpoint Brewery, Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, and Evil Twin Brewing. Also, look for DeCicco’s sponsorship at many local beer events, including Savor New York.

The Beer Necessities

Why it’s great: This long, narrow store is literally lined (or was when last we checked) with 874 beers in bottles (and another 91 in cans) that hail from every beer-making nook on the globe. Look for a dizzying assortment to suit every taste and whim, but, best of all, The Beer Necessities also offers 15 quickly rotating taps for growler fills. Look for daily discounted growlers and a PEGAS CrafTap system that removes oxygen from filled growlers (so that they last longer capped in your fridge).

Whole Foods Market
(Yonkers)
Why it’s great: The Yonkers location of Whole Foods Market offers the whole package in a beer run. You can grab a cartful of organic, vegan, and gluten-free snack food, some biodegradable TP, and still walk out of the store with a couple of freshly filled growlers. Look for six taps devoted to local and domestic beers. The good news? All the draught beers at Whole Foods are also available in both 64-ounce growlers and 32-ounce half-growlers. The bad news? They don’t call this place Whole Paycheck for nothing.

The Green Growler

Why it’s great: Like The Beer Necessities, The Green Growler offers a wide assortment of beers in bottles and cans. Plus, the store offers seven quickly changing taps that pour mostly domestic and local beers for growler fills. But what The Green Growler has that The Beer Necessities doesn’t is all sorts of beer-making equipment ranging from small hygrometers to giant carboys. While you’re there, check out The Green Growler’s assortment of beer-themed snacks—there’s even beer candy!

Worth the Trip: The Hop
Part retail beer store, part restaurant, Chef Matt Hutchins’ collaboration with partners John Kavanagh and John Kelly is the closest real life can come to beer lovers’ porn. Shop for your personal fantasy baseball team of beers in bottles and cans, then stay to hit the nine taps that rotate through American and European cult brews. At The Hop, cask-conditioned ales make frequent appearances behind the bar; plus, Matt Hutchins’ stunning locavorian menu is worth a visit on its own. Expect all manner of delicious, beer-friendly food, including house-made pretzels and stunning sandwiches. Hutchins is actually a charcuterie master: look for house-made pâtés, pork rillettes, and a killer rabbit and raisin terrine.
