Take your date night or dinner party to the next level with an at-home, expandable nigiri dinner crafted by an expert sushi chef.
Growing up in a Ukrainian immigrant family with its own food traditions, Max Weiss wanted to understand those of other cultures. That’s why he was intrigued by restaurants, where he could explore entire cultures within four walls.
Weiss was particularly enchanted by sushi counters and the omakase experience. A failed attempt through his sushi-chef network to find one to come to his home during the pandemic summer of 2020 led him and partner Jake Poznak to create Ten Homakase, a company that brings omakase to homes, rooftops, boats, and beaches.
“Sushi is my favorite food,” says the 25-year-old Weiss, who was raised in Greenwich and graduated from the Brunswick School and Cornell University’s hospitality school. He appreciates the minimalist design of omakase restaurants, that the experience is almost fully about the fish, and that it is prepared in front of you. “I don’t know if there’s another dining experience that focuses so much on just the food that you’re eating,” he says.
Ten Homakase offers top-notch sushi-chef-crafted expandable nigiri dinners of 12, 15, or 17 courses, starting at $225 per person, which can be customized for vegetarians and kosher clients, as well as sushi-making classes with an abridged omakase experience, and sake tastings. Most of their fish is sourced from around the globe and flown in from Japan and domestically from New England; fluke, blue crab, and oysters come from Long Island’s East End.
The idea of bringing a specific kind of dining, like omakase, directly to homes taps into the trend of consumers seeking unique experiences. For an engagement proposal, Ten Homakase even disguised a photographer as a waiter. The chefs engage diners, creating a singular, interactive meal. Says Weiss: “The team is thrilled to create memorable moments for guests.”
