The menu at The Tasty Table is all about baked goods and comfort food.
After years of family and friends telling her she should open a restaurant, Lisa Ocasio (who was featured in our 2013 home-cooks feature, “Kitchen Confidential”) decided to take their advice. A month ago, the Cortlandt Manor resident opened The Tasty Table in Ossining, taking over the space that had previously been town favorite Wobble Café.
“I want to make this an extension of my home with a warm, inviting atmosphere and the recipes I love,” Ocasio says. She notes that she has an Italian background, and her husband is Puerto Rican, “so in both our cultures life revolves around food.” Ocasio brings those influences to her menus for breakfast, lunch, and Sunday brunch.
Brunch is the meal where Ocasio says customers tend to try more dishes, ordering a number of items to share, sampling the sweet and savory side of the meal, and lingering at the table. The meal can start with some killer baked goods, including a scone of the day or a lemon-ricotta cookie. Other sweet treats include brioche French toast and an açai bowl. There’s a great bacon-egg-and-cheese bagel sandwich for breakfast purists, as well as a number of frittatas and, of course, avocado toast.
To warm customers during the winter months, there are heartier options, including a number of filling soups and handmade empanadas, made the way her husband’s aunt taught her. The meatball sandwich and personal deep-dish pizza are also popular brunch options. “I describe the menu as comfort food with a twist,” Ocasio says.
For those dining at The Tasty Table during lunch, shareable items include a jumbo Bavarian pretzel, a cheese board with fruit compote, and a bread board with smoked-brown-sugar butter. The café also features a fridge filled with grab-and-go items, and Ocasio is thinking of adding a “Tasty Tuesday Takeout” dinner menu. “I put care into every dish, so I want to make sure we perfect the three meals we’re serving before we start adding on,” she says.
Ocasio is gratified that the Ossining community has already proved loyal. While she redid the interior (gone are the antiques and the space is light and airy) she is looking for residents and Ossining visitors to retain “their affinity for this location.”
