If you haven’t checked out Westchester Taco Grill in New Rochelle yet, you are missing out (if not for the tacos, then for the decadent desserts). The North Ave spot, from the team behind Posto 22, Gemelli Pizzeria, and New Rochelle Barbecue, opened in late 2016 and features a clean, cool atmosphere.
The menu includes appetizers like Buffalo chicken quesadillas, vegetable empanadas, and crispy wings, plus an array of signature tacos. The chipotle-shrimp taco filled with marinated shrimp, fresh mango salsa, and chipotle, is a flavorful start to the meal. Other renditions include bangin’ Buffalo, kung pao shrimp, beer-battered fish, or tequila-lime chicken tacos. All are available on flour or corn tortillas, hard shells, or lettuce wraps. And what’s a taco without a cocktail? You’ll find margs, sangria, and beer on tap, including Fathom IPA, Modelo Negra, and selections from Captain Lawrence.
Healthier options include DIY rice or grain bowls. Choose a base: quinoa, rice noodles, zucchini noodles, white or brown rice, or baby bok choy. Top with protein including chicken, steak, shrimp, and organic tofu. Then, mix in any three vegetables: asparagus, broccoli, sugar snap peas, peppers, and more. A zucchini-noodle bowl with shrimp, spinach, carrots, and mushrooms, topped with kale pesto, was a satisfying mix.
Even if you’re going the healthy route, it’s crucial that you leave room for desserts like ice cream tacos and churro bread pudding. If only to post a photo on Instagram, you should order one of the ice cream sundaes like the Lucky Charms-topped Unicorn or The Cookie Monster, with scoops of Longford’s blue Cookie Monster ice cream, chocolate syrup and whipped cream, topped with a chocolate chip cookie. It’s every kid’s and adult’s dream, served in a martini glass.
