The Taco Project has been open for almost a year, but it has already received attention from the New York Times and earned a spot on Westchester Magazine’s “9 Best New Restaurants” list. The experience is casual (you order at the register and can opt to sit at the window counter), but the tacos are not the stuff of fast-food joints. Most tacos pack in a mix of flavors (think pork belly with pineapple), and you can choose between house-made hard-shell corn tortillas and locally sourced soft corn tortillas.

Taco Dive Bar

Taco Dive Bar is the newest addition to the Westchester taco scene, having just opened in July. Its location near the Peekskill train station and the Hudson River make it a great spot to grab drinks (go for the Margarita) and a bite to eat. The tacos are pricier than those at comparable Westchester locations, but the high-quality, local ingredients do make for delicious tacos. Taco Dive Bar is able to jazz up normally lack-luster tacos with ingredients like goat cheese, pickled vegetables, and truffle vinaigrette.

If you’re sick of trendy tacos with feta cheese and maple-glazed meat, head to Los Gemelos for a more authentic experience. Los Gemelos has been open since 2000 as a taqueria and tortilla factory. The factory’s tortillas are used in the restaurant’s tacos, which may be as local as you can get. Each taco comes with two tortillas and is bursting with meat. If you really want an authentic Mexican meal, try a veal brain or beef intestine taco. (But pork is a great option too for less audacious eaters.)

This stylish, Byram River-fronted taqueria offers reasonably priced fare, most of which is listed under one of two straight-forwardly charming categories, “Tacos” and “Not Tacos.” If you can’t decide which tacos to order—don’t. Instead get a tray of the “chef’s selections.” The ordering system (fill out an order card and stick it on a mini “flagpole” to alert server) lets you set the pace of your meal. And, keeping in mind the eatery’s name, don’t forget to order an inventive cocktail or one of 40+ tequilas offered.
