With an eye to introducing customers to growing categories in wines and spirits and being a one-stop shop offering everything from a bottle of wine for two to a previously unheard-of small-batch spirit, Rachel Tieger is looking forward to having Savvy Sips Wines and Spirits become an integral part of the Rivertowns’ communities.
The store, which opened in October 2023, took over the space of another wine and liquor store. Tieger, who formerly worked for a wine and spirits distributor, is bringing her passion for smaller wineries, local vineyards, and the emergent category of earth-friendly wines to the store. “The shop’s name covers the overall ethos of the store,” Tieger says.
The 660-sq-ft floor (with cork flooring from Portugal) is set up with wine shelves displaying wines from various countries running along one side, and spirits on the other wall. Tieger can introduce you to some small-batch spirits, focusing on local, grain-to-glass offerings as much as possible. In the middle of the store are five wine racks categorized as “Earth Friendly,” “New Arrivals,” “Natural & Orange,” “I Love Local,” and “Under $20.”
Especially in the summer months, when people picnic along the Hudson, Savvy Sips features a selection of ready-made cocktails, with whites and rosés cooling in the refrigerator in the back. “I’ve already seen the majority of my customers are open to learning,” says Tieger. “I love to be able to mix it up with them a little and show them some interesting selections they have never heard of.”
