Larchmont welcomed a new frozen yogurt shop last month in April, just in time for the upcoming summer season. Located at 144 Larchmont Avenue, the new shop not only features delicious desserts but also lounge-style seating and modern décor for a family-friendly atmosphere.
For those unfamiliar with the brand, 16 Handles first made its mark as New York City’s OG self-serve frozen yogurt dessert shop with its original store in Manhattan’s East Village in 2008. Since then, it has expanded to over 30 locations. In addition to its signature frozen yogurt, which comes in the namesake 16 flavors, the brand also serves ice cream, take-home pints, 50 premium toppings, drinks, and other sweet treats.
Now open for business, the Larchmont fro-yo shop’s menu includes limited-edition flavor launches like Butter Beer, Coconut Lemon Saffron, and Keto Chocolate Brownie, along with classic flavors like Classic Vanilla and Original Tart. Owners Ben and Cristy Garcia have a special connection to the brand, which inspired them to open their own shop after relocating from New York City to the suburbs of Larchmont.
The story behind the Larchmont shop
While dating in New York City, Cristy and Ben lived next to a 16 Handles shop—a favorite spot where they would unwind and create lasting memories. After deciding to relocate to the suburbs for more space in October 2017, the Garcias wanted to bring their experience to their new Larchmont community.
In the past 13 years, Ben has worked a career in disaster relief, focusing on hurricane cleanup and critical recovery efforts to help rebuild communities and recover from disaster. He also has a strong connection to Larchmont, having served as a volunteer firefighter there for six and a half years. Cristy continues to work for a leading global tech business in New York City as the chief marketing officer while working closely with her husband on strategy, branding, and community engagement for their shop.
The move to Westchester
Making the decision to relocate to the suburbs was not an easy one.
“It’s true we had a hard time making the decision, but I am so glad that we did,” Cristy shares of their 2017 move. “We have two children now, and I can’t imagine raising them without being close to Ben’s family. And, of course, I’ve now fallen in love with Larchmont and can’t imagine living anywhere else! The community is just so lovely, and it’s really a happening little town with tons of activities for families.”
Even after the couple’s relocation, the Garcias felt that something was missing: namely, a local 16 Handles. So, they leaned into their entrepreneurial spirits and decided to bring one to life.
“What we love about 16 Handles is that it creates a space where the community can come together and build lasting memories,” Ben notes.
The couple saw Larchmont as the perfect place to relive their memories of visiting a 16 Handles shop—only this time as owners. “There’s nothing like it in Larchmont, and we knew there were people like us who loved the brand. With upbeat music and an energetic vibe, we hope this becomes a place where people can truly connect, enjoy each other’s company, and treat themselves to some incredible frozen yogurt,” Ben enthuses.
Grand opening moments
Since the grand opening on April 26, the Garcias have already begun reflecting on their experience as business owners. Their favorite part? The community’s positive response.
“I’d have to say my favorite part has been the reaction to our business,” Ben admits. “On the grand opening day, we had over 200 people in line before we opened the doors and, while it cooled off a bit, we still see a packed store especially after school and on the weekends. We knew it would be a hit, but the warm response from the community has been overwhelming.”
The Garcias are thrilled with the turnout from the Larchmont community. Much of the opening day allure stemmed from the fact that the shop offered free frozen yogurt for the first 100 guests, half-price treats from 12 to 5 p.m., and other discounts during the opening weekend. Now that people have gotten to experience what the shop is all about, the owners hope they continue to draw in locals as the weather heats up.
“It’s so amazing to see something that started as a fun idea evolve into a thriving business. The location, staff, and, of course, the fro-yo drives really deliver, so guests come back often, giving us a chance to get to know new people in the community,” Cristy says.

What’s in store at 16 Handles
The Garcias are already looking at what’s ahead for their business. On top of hiring for positions, they are focusing on making sure that their store runs smoothly. The couple also hopes to open another location in the future.
“Right now, we’re focused on making sure the store runs smoothly and consistently delivers a great experience,” Ben explains. “But longer term, we’d love to explore opening another location, maybe even in a neighboring town. We’ve also been tossing around ideas for seasonal specials and collaborations with other local businesses. There’s a lot of potential, and we’re excited to keep building on the momentum.”
The Garcias are also open to community suggestions and ideas. Cristy adds, “We’ve gotten so many great suggestions from guests: everything from hosting birthday parties to offering more toppings—so we’re listening closely. It’s still early days, but we’re dreaming big while staying really focused on making this first shop the best it can be.”
16 Handles Larchmont is open from noon to 10 p.m. every day and is currently hiring for positions including managers, assistant managers, and shift leads with a minimum of two years of experience in the food service industry.
