Spending a Day on the Boat? Here's What to Pack

Shops near local marinas offer some boat-ready bites.

Westchester is home to spectacular water views, with the blue skies and summer sun only better from the deck of a cruise. Boat shoes and water-resistant clothes aren’t the only things you’ll want to pack before you set sail, food (and drinks) should also be on the menu for a long day out on the water.

Near Larchmont Yacht Club, DeCicco & Sons’ Larchmont location creates platters for chowing down on your aquatic adventure. Choose from options like cheese platters, fruit salad, mesclun greens (with sliced apples, cranberries, and walnuts), tortilla chips and dip, and a hummus platter with pita bread and veggies. Know you’ll be soaking in the suns rays on Saturday? Give DeCicco’s a heads up and preorder for pickup or delivery. That way, you’ll your perfectly packable Irish potato salad, Mediterranean quinoa salad, and choice of sandwich (on freshly baked bread) will be ready to go.

Just a few blocks from the Tide Mill Yacht Basin in Rye, Jerry’s Post Road Market is the perfect spot to grab some casual grub. Sandwiches and wraps can be stuffed with Boar’s Head cold cuts or done vegetarian with mushrooms, asparagus, roasted red peppers, and house-made mozzarella. (Jerry’s suggest calling the day before your trip as platters take at least two hours to prep). The market also has dozens of snacks — pretzels, cookies, and baked goods — to sneak in between meals.

Whipping wind and strong sun can tire you out. For a quick pick-me-up, stock your boat with caffeinated beverages from First Village Coffee in Ossining. With its close proximity to the town’s Westerly Marina, the coffee shop is the ideal place to order cold brew, iced coffee, and matcha-lemonade, made with Harney & Sons matcha green tea, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, simple syrup, and sparkling water. (Call two days in advance for large orders). While you’re at this Ossining hotspot, see if you can get your hands on the Peaceful Provisions’ quick-selling vegan doughnuts and pastries for when your energy starts to wane at the end of the day on the way back to the dock.
