Make sure your sweet tooth is ready when you head to Joey’s Cannoli, a cozy dessert café that just opened its doors on a block connecting Huguenot and Main Streets in New Rochelle. The pint-size espresso bar is packed with imported Italian treats, cream-filled everything, and, as the name suggests, several riffs on the classic cannoli.
Fittingly, you’ll want to start with a cannoli. Encased in a light, crispy shell, they’re piped full of homemade cream and are decorated on either end with a fun array of toppings, including chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, Oreo crumbles, chopped Reese’s, pistachios, walnuts, or rainbow sprinkles. The signature Joey’s cannoli comes with a Ferrero Rocher nestled into each end.
Co-owner Franca Capuano, whose family ran Pizza King in Mount Vernon for decades, got the idea to launch Joey’s Cannoli after her three kids started school. Her business partner, Maria Leoni, a first-grade teacher in the Bronx, works evening and weekend shifts while school’s out. Leoni credits her mom, an Italian immigrant, for her cannoli-cream-crafting wisdom.
According to Leoni, many of the pastries, including the pleasantly crunchy cannoli shells, come from a trusted baker in Brooklyn. The cannoli cream is made in-house and the cannoli are assembled onsite. Gelato is imported directly from Sicily, as are the bottled fruit sodas. There’s also a wide, rotating selection of sliced cakes, petit fours, and larger iced pastries, most of which are cream-filled. Eat your treats with an attractive espresso drink in the street-view café space, or get desserts boxed up to go.
