Little Kabab Station: Not So Little, Anymore; Wine vs. Beer at Birdsall House; DreamHome with Chef Peter Kelly and the Kittle House; and It’s Duck Fat Potatoes at Harper’s

Little Kabab Station to Debut Little Crepe Street

Earlier this year, when I reviewed Little Kabab Station, it was still barely a toehold on Mount Kisco’s Main Street. Its 12 or so seats meant that LKS was part restaurant (and mostly take-out counter), but it turns out that LKS’s stylish version of Indian food struck a chord with local diners. Several raves by Martha Stewart helped to raise its profile, as did recent celebrity visits by President Bill Clinton, Blake Lively, and Ryan Reynolds. This spring, LKS debuted a companion business, Little Spice Bazaar, an ingenious lassi bar that stuck a pin in the whole Pinkberry/Red Mango bubble by offering tasty, Ayurvedic yogurt drinks paired with craveable snacks of chaat.

But the odd thing about the twin businesses, Little Spice Bazaar and Little Kabab Station, was that they were separated by another Mount Kisco business, Smokers Harbor, at 29 E Main Street. Of course, the obstacle of the cigar store didn’t stop waiters from serving LKS overflow at LSB, and you would often see servers trotting down Main Street, arms loaded with curries. The demise of Smokers Harbor proved too good to pass up for Little Kebab’s owner, Bonnie Saran, so she’s teamed up with a new partner, Viktor Solarik, to debut Little Crepe Street, a 22-seat creperie set to open at the end of this month.

One might be forgiven for assuming that Little Crepe Street will serve dosas, the crisp rolled Indian treat currently in the news, but Saran’s plan is to serve French-style crepes. “We’ll be offering some Indian fillings—it’ll basically be a choose-your-own-filling crepe, but mostly classic ingredients and locally raised produce from Red Jacket Farms. Actually, crepes are a new thing to me. I told this to Martha Stewart, and she invited me over to her home to show me how to make them! Isn’t that so nice?” Little Crepe Street’s menu will offer buckwheat and gluten-free crepes, salads, and (with the opening of one wall) Crepe Street will open to Little Spice Bazaar so that diners can also enjoy lassis.

Also new for Saran is Crepe Street’s coffee bar, which will offer BonJo coffee, locally roasted in Port Chester. “I’ve never taken a sip of coffee in my life! But we’ll be offering espresso and cappuccino, but none of those artificial sugary syrups.”

Welcome to Fall: Duck Fat Roasted Potatoes at Harper’s

This is a Public Service Announcement from EDP.

Fall is here, so don’t be an idiot. You’ve got eight whole months before you need to air your pale, wobbly flesh again in public. It’s time now to throw on a few cozy layers and get down to some serious eating. This week on EDP, we’re pretty excited about this pile of autumn deliciousness: duck fat potatoes at Harper’s in Dobbs Ferry. Just look at them. They’re all golden-crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside, and, folks, they arrive tongue-scorchingly hot and salty—- but with an occasional dip from their generous topper of whipped horseradish crème fraiche, you won’t be able to stop eating. Crisp but creamy, hot but cool, painful but soothing… this is what eating is all about. I reached Chef/Owner Chris Vergara in his kitchen to talk about this dish and he admitted, “Yeah, everyone around here is pretty excited about winter. Guess what I’m making? I’m making blanquette de veau right now!”
