Adios Cuba, Ola Mexico

Fans of Mount Kisco’s Coco Rumba have no doubt noticed that the former Cuban restaurant has been re-named Hacienda del Sol, specializing in Mexican cuisine.

According to owner Juan Carlos Ruiz, the change was partially due to customer demand. With the closing of his other Mount Kisco restaurant, Villa del Sol, customers clamored for a Mexican restaurant to fill the void; Ruiz and his daughter Lisa ultimately decided to make the switch from Cuban to Mexican.

The exterior and interior of the building have remained largely unchanged, including the bar area and tropical, bright dining room, highlighted by a palm tree standing at the center. What’s been added are decorative flourishes, such as Mexican paintings, pottery, and serapes.

The menu now features a variety of Mexican and Latin American specialties. On the appetizers menu, three types of ceviche ($8-$12): lobster, shrimp, and fish. Main courses include enchilada suizas ($13.95)—chicken and cheese in a soft tortilla with green tomatillo sauce, and carnitas of slow roasted pork with rice, beans, and plantains ($15.95). Sizzling shrimp, steak, chicken, or seafood fajitas ($16.95-$24.95) are served with fresh guacamole and pico de gallo.

A few Coco Rumba favorites, like the beef brisket rope vieja ($17.95) and seafood paella ($25), remain on the menu. Desserts include flan, sopapillas (deep- fried dough), and churros.

A patio area will be open during summer months. The bar serves up authentic Margaritas and happy hours on weekdays from 4 to 7 pm, with discounts on drinks and hot or cold hors d’oeuvres.

Ruiz says Hacienda del Sol is an especially fun place to celebrate a birthday (which includes singing by the staff). A mariachi band and other festivities are planned for Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day.
