6 August Food Festivals Worth a Summer Day Trip

August 15

Hudson Valley Magazine’s Burger & Beer Bash

Dutchess Stadium, Wappingers Falls

Excuse us a little self promotion, but our sister pub Hudson Valley Magazine is bringing the beef with its annual Burger & Beer Bash. A $55 ticket ($65 at the door) includes sliders from 15 local restaurants hoping to be crowned “Best of the Bash”, including Henry’s at the Farm, TFS Burger Works, and Mill House Brewing Company, plus lots of ice-cold beer, live music, and other vendors to sate your appetite when you can’t handle any more burgers.

August 16–18

Hudson Valley Ribfest

Ulster County Fairgrounds, New Paltz

Barbecue in every permutation (Mexican, Jamaican, classic American, and more) is the draw at this annual festival that’ll have you grabbing for some extra napkins. See who smokes the competition to win a NYS championship in the BBQ Contest, up your culinary cred in the demo tent, and stick around for live music (mostly country and rock) throughout the weekend. General Admission runs $5-$7, while a Best of the Fest VIP ticket (unlimited ribs and beer, exclusive samples from vendors, and a private tent close to the stage) will set you back $60-$70.

August 20–25

Dutchess County Fair

Dutchess County Fairgrounds, Rhinebeck

Though it’s not technically a food fest, indulging (forget your calorie count for the day) in all the deep-fried monstrosities and summertime favorites is part of the fun of attending a county fair. This year’s assembly will feature more than 75 food-and-drink vendors, meaning you’ll find everything from funnel cakes, fried Oreos, bacon on a stick, and giant turkey legs to kettle corn, fresh-squeezed lemonade, sausage and peppers subs, and frozen custard.

2019 Wine and Sangria Pig Roast

Brotherhood Winery, Washingtonville

The sangria flows freely at this annual event at Brotherhood, established in 1939. The fest, which benefits Outreach Orange of the Hudson Valley, is exactly the kind of lazy summer afternoon that August was meant for with plenty of tender pork, lots of drinks, and live entertainment — all included with the $60 ticket.

August 24–25

Hey Stamford! Food Festival

Mill River Park, Stamford

Okay, it’s not the Hudson Valley, but this two-day Fairfield County event (don’t miss The BB King Blue Band on August 24) boasts an A+ lineup of food trucks and vendors. Grab a spicy jalapeño-popper grilled cheese from Melt Mobile, some Kona Ice, Mao Bao’s pan-fried soup dumplings, anything and everything from Donut Crazy, and a Shark Tank-approved lobster roll from Cousins Maine Lobster. (Food and drinks are not included in the $15 price tag.)

August 31

Hudson Valley Vegan Food Festival

The Peoples Park, Newburgh

Wellness and hearty appetites collide at this fourth-annual celebration of vegan food and culture (admission is $5). More than 30 vegan and/or vegetarian restaurants and vendors will be in attendance, but the fest does more than just good eats. Expect a full slate of wellness offerings, including yoga, a Kids’ Fitness Corner, presentations on plant-based diet and lifestyle, and products for sale, as well as live music.
