Restaurant Review: Il Sorriso

Perched on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River, Il Sorriso Ristorante Italiano is the perfect spot for an intimate rendezvous. The restaurant, situated in a charming colonial house, is located in the quaint town of Irvington. In warmer months, guests can dine outdoors on the patio and during the winter, they can find a cozy spot to warm themselves in the newly renovated wine cellar or in the stately dining rooms which feature old photographs of 1920s Italy.

Il Sorriso’s menu offers rustic Italian cuisine and is filled with unusual selections that will delight anyone looking for something more adventurous than fettucine alfredo.

For starters, the salmone affumicato norvegese con mesticanza, Norwegian smoked salmon with baby greens in a lemon olive oil dressing, will satisfy a desire for seafood. The carpaccio di manzo al parmigiano, thinly sliced beef with arugula and parmesan cheese, is a more substantial antipasti for heartier eaters.

Deciding between the restaurant’s homemade pastas is difficult, but standouts include the pasta alla chitarra al ragu d’angello, spaghetti in a red lamb ragu, and the agnolotti alla fiorentian, pillows of pasta filled with spinach and veal in a butter and sage sauce. If pasta doesn’t pique your palate, Il Sorriso offers risotto which changes daily.

Veal, a specialty of the house, is served up in a variety of ways including three different choices of veal scaloppine: topped with mozzarella cheese and a white wine, tomato sauce; with shiitake mushrooms, basil and pine nuts or with asparagus, artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes. Chicken, lamb and seafood dishes also fill the menu with the rana pescatrice in salsa di porro, monk fish sautéed with asparagus and a leek sauce, makingfor a flavorful main course. In addition to its upscale fare, Il Sorriso also serves pizza baked in the restaurant’s own wood-burning oven.

It is all but impossible to resist dessert after the mouthwatering choices are wheeled out on a wooden cart. On a recent visit, the homemade sweets included a luscious berry tart, a decadent chocolate mousse cake as well as tiramisu and a ricotta-filled cannoli. Espresso, served in traditional mini cups, makes for a fitting end to a classic Italian meal.
