Restaurant Review: Equus Restaurant (Castle on the Hudson)

Want to dine out feeling like a king or a queen? You may indeed feel like royalty when dining in the exquisitely-appointed Equus restaurant, housed in the turn-of-the-century Castle at Tarrytown. The majestic castle, crowning the region’s highest hilltop, overlooks New York’s lush green Hudson River Valley. The view alone can make you feel heady.

On warm nights, you can opt to eat outside on a lovely stone patio, where white umbrella shaded tables sit surrounded by a verdant lawn dotted with an array of multicolored flowers. Or dine inside and enjoy your meal in the elegant and luxurious dining room.

Begin with a subtly flavored cold soup of peas and mint with a near paper-thin “cannelloni,” filled with fresh lobster and creamy goat cheese. Or treat yourself to bite-size pieces of perfectly seared yellowfin tuna, coated with a spicy pepper and tamarind glaze. Or maybe you’d rather start with white truffle risotto studded with porcini mushrooms and roasted shallots. Caviar—beluga, oestra, or sevruga—is available as well.

For your main course? The pan-seared sea scallops are tender and luscious, bathed in a warm sherry-truffle vinaigrette. The walnut-crusted pork tenderloin is moist with a bold fricassee of morels and fingerling potatoes. Other main course choices: Black Angus beef with swiss chard and Vidalia onions; medallions of lamb with an eggplant stew and ratatouille sauce; and grilled swordfish in a curry-coconut sauce.

You may follow up your main course with slices of local and international cheeses from the cheese tray, along with raisin pecan bread and clusters of grapes. And/or choose from one of the many delectable desserts. The rich milk chocolate tart is swathed in a pleasing honey sauce; the chilled soup of strawberry and rhubarb is sweet and refreshing. Also, there’s napoleon of berries with almond crust, roasted apples with lemongrass and streusel, and a selection of homemade ice cream and sorbet. Definitely a meal fit for a king—or a queen.
