Augie’s Prime Cut in Mohegan Lake, one of the few steakhouses in northern Westchester, is celebrating its 9th anniversary, a milestone in the notoriously difficult restaurant business.
Audrey Hochroth, who owns Augie’s with her husband, Sal, says they’re successful because they “change things a lot. We’re not your typical steakhouse,” she adds, commenting that the menu includes chicken wings, fish and seafood, and that a wedge salad and starch comes with the meal rather than a la carte.
While the cocktail and wine list is revised frequently, the anniversary provided an opportunity for some additional changes. The bar area has been refreshed with a longer bar, blue lights, and high-top tables for more of a lounge feel. “It’s more boutique-y than other steakhouses, glitzy and more trendy,” says Hochroth. Also new is a raw bar with oysters, crab legs, shrimp, and a seafood tower. “People are staying longer at the new bar, everyone’s eating more and drinking more,” she observes.
A full lunch and dinner menu is available in the bar and dining room. All meat is Prime grade and cut onsite. The cowboy rib eye can be cut on request. Other popular cuts are porterhouse for two and the New York strip. Happy hour, called “prime time,” is weekdays and Sunday afternoons.
The Hochroths are a big presence at the restaurant, making sure customers are happy. And despite the trend towards eating less meat she says, “people are still into a good steak and a good martini.”
