Where to Get a Perfect Po’boy in Westchester County

These spots bring the tastes of the Bayou right to our backyard. Here's where to dig into a delicious po'boy in Westchester.

Despite its Big Easy roots and more formal name of “poor boy,” the po’boy is taking hold in Westchester and has residents living large come mealtime. These Westchester restaurants have top-notch po’boy sandwiches that will hit the spot.

Alvin & Friends

14 Memorial Hwy, New Rochelle; 914.654.6549

Known for its cozy and friendly yet upscale vibe, as well as its Southern- and Caribbean-inspired cuisine, Alvin & Friends serves up a chicken po’boy that might have you confusing New Ro for NOLA. Choose crispy shrimp, chicken, or catfish and enjoy on hero bread with lettuce, tomato, and lemon caper remoulade for a little bit of zip. Finish off the meal with one of Alvin’s tasty desserts like sorrel cheesecake or a walnut brownie.

The Bayou Restaurant

580 Gramatan Ave, Mount Vernon; 914.668.2634

From the decorated walls to the live music to the Cajun eats, this spot, celebrating its 30th anniversary this Mardi Gras, will transport you instantly to New Orleans. The selection of po’boys includes classics like shrimp or catfish, along with variations including the popular grilled blackened chicken or the pulled pork with barbecue sauce and crunchy chopped red onions. If you’re looking for a vegetarian option or want to bring some Middle East to this Southern party, try the falafel po’boy.

Bridge View Tavern

226 Beekman Ave, Sleepy Hollow; 914.332.0078

With an old-world tavern feel and spectacular views, the Westchester mainstay offers an “escape from the troubles of the world” and an eclectic menu of food and drinks. This classic take on the po’boy includes five big ol’ wild domestic shrimp fried in a crispy cornmeal and flour coating and served up on fresh-baked bread with a spicy creole remoulade, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles.

While there are plenty of fish in the sandwich sea, not all can match this combination of high-quality seafood and authentic Southern taste. Sub out the shrimp for house-smoked Louisiana andouille sausage when available on special.

Go Fish

837 White Plains Rd, Scarsdale; 914.725.3450

This takeout companion to the Eastchester Fish Gourmet restaurant and fish market serves up lunch favorites from under the sea ranging from fish and chips to poke bowls to mahi mahi tacos. Among them is a po’boy featuring the same West Coast oysters sold in the fish market, fried crisp and served on toasted French baguette. Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and spicy remoulade finish off this concoction, thereby marrying the Pacific and the Bayou right here in Westchester.

Come for the fresh raw fish, from salmon to scallops, and stay for the freshly prepared seafood favorites, including this version of the shrimp po’boy. The same small Panama shrimp sold in the market are fried with flour and seasoning and piled on a Kaiser roll. Lettuce and habanero mayo finish off this sandwich, which begs to be eaten in nearby Harbor Island Park, where you can enjoy Mamaroneck’s own waterfront views while chowing down on this staple of the Gulf.

Rye Roadhouse

12 High St, Rye; 914.925.2668

Pair a nice lager with a nice sandwich at this popular restaurant and bar, which prides itself on fresh food and a friendly atmosphere. The shrimp or catfish po’boy comes on French bread with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and Cajun remoulade. Choose to have your catfish crispy fried in cornmeal, blackened, or grilled; just like in New Orleans, anything goes! And just like in New Orleans, you’ll probably want a drink or two with that.
