There are national days for everything—but not every national food day can be celebrated with the new kid on the ice cream cart that’s hitting Penny Lick Ice Cream stores across the county.
To honor the brand’s recent Best of Westchester win for Best Sorbet, owner and producer of what dreams are made of, Ellen Sledge, is adding a new limited-time flavor to the cones and cups of patrons. Working with Westchester Magazine and 914INC. Editor Cristiana Caruso (oh hey, that’s me!), the flavor is an echo of summer, eliciting the feeling of relaxing in the shade after a long day: salted watermelon.
P.S. Did we mention it drops just in time for National Watermelon Day on August 10?

“We’re all about creating a moment of nostalgia with our offerings,” says Sledge. “When you think about summer, you generally think about those backyard barbecues and sinking your teeth into juicy watermelon. We thought that balancing the sweetness with a bit of salty was the perfect way to make a more creative flavor.”
Using endless amounts of fresh watermelon for a juicy texture that requires no eating around a rind, the bites are refreshing, flavorful, and snapshots of the season. Not dredged down with sugar, this sorbet is a treat that feels more like a requirement on the food pyramid and not a cheat meal. As the flavor bounces along your palate, the salt takes center stage, giving a welcome juxtaposition to the sweetness. The sorbet is a balancing act, not a tug of war, with the flavors taking turns to showcase their talents without trying to compete. It’s a sad moment when your spoon hits the bottom of that cup.
If you’re already fumbling with your keys to head to your closest Penny Lick, we don’t blame you—like all good things, this flavor is limited edition and will only be available through the end of September. And that’s not the type of FOMO you want to live with, right?
