David Starkey, owner of Dobbs Ferry’s Tomatillo, and partner Theresa McCarthy, formerly general manager at Millennio in Scarsdale, have opened Sweet Grass Grill (24 Main St, Tarrytown, no phone as of press time; sweetgrassgrill.com). The New American restaurant (entrées between $10 and $20) has moved into the spot that once housed Main Street Café. Leading the kitchen is CIA grad Carl Lasley, previously the entremetier (vegetable cook) at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. The menu offers such dishes as homemade sausages, grass-fed buffalo burgers, and lightly cured roasted salmon. The eatery serves lunch and dinner Tues to Sun and brunch Sat and Sun // Joseph and Nes Jaffre have bought the 17-room, 1740 landmark Roger Sherman Inn (195 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan, CT 203-966-4541; rogershermaninn.com) from Tom Weillerman for approximately $4.8 million and hired Christophe Cadou to be the Inn’s new executive chef. Cadou was previously with Vox in North Salem. (Eric Ulbrich, formerly at Park Café in Greenwich, Connecticut, replaces Cadou at Vox.) The Jaffres have added a bar menu for the 35-seat lounge which features an acoustic guitarist on Saturdays. “We want the Inn to be a bit less formal,” says Joseph Jaffre, “not just a special-occasion place for weddings and banquets.” Dine (sans jacket, if you like; they’re no longer required) on dishes such as toasted almond-crusted wild striped bass with Champagne sauce; grilled prawns and diver sea scallops with baby bok choy and green curry basmati; and rosemary and garlic crusted rack of lamb with preserved lemon and Jerusalem couscous. Dinner entrées cost between $24 and $48. Joseph had owned Le Château in South Salem—which Jaffre’s ex-wife, Monique, now runs—for 27 years // Lighter fare is now available at 42 (Ritz-Carlton, Westchester, One Renaissance Sq, White Plains 914-761-4242; 42therestaurant.com), which has introduced a small-plates menu, that includes sashimi-style tuna, beet salad with goat cheese, and crab croquette with pomegranate reduction. The new items cost between $9 and $19 (plus $1 oysters Tues through Fri from 6:30-8:30 pm) and can be enjoyed in the 24-seat lounge or at the 36-seat bar
flaky empanadas from Empanada Joe’s
Joseph Tesone, owner of Seasons American Bistro & Lounge (289 Rte 100, Somers 914-276-0600; seasonsatsomers.com) has launched the first two locations of Empanada Joe’s (683 8th Ave, Manhattan 212-977-2600; 2857 Broadway, Manhattan 212-678-0022; empanada joes.com), a Latin American street-food franchise with 30 planned New York City-metro openings by 2010. The main item at the grab-and-go eatery is, of course, the empanada ($3.38), from a recipe by Seasons Executive Chef Hugo Contrera. // Restaurateur Don Emelio, previously host at Sunset Grille in White Plains and formerly owner of Don Emilio’s in Larchmont and Stamford, Connecticut, has opened Mexican restaurant Don Emilio at Lobo’s Café (57-59 King St, Chappaqua 914-238-2368). Jose Gonzalez, of Don Emilio’s, and Jose Ramirez, previously a sous chef at Sunset Grille, share kitchen duties. Dinner entrées range from $18 to $24 and include broiled salmon steak in a mango sauce, Veracruz-style baked snapper, and enchiladas Poblanas. Lunch is served weekdays, dinner every day, plus brunch ($11.95) on Sat and Sun. // Chef/owner Rafael Palomino has closed the high-end Latin-seafooder Pacifico (316 Boston Post Rd, Port Chester). A plan to reopen the space as a casual burgers-and-wraps spot has been canceled.
