New Rochelle Gets A New Korean Barbecue

In an area with almost no Korean food, we emitted a collective squeal of delight to see a bright yellow flag above a storefront saying Korean BBQ & Salad Bar. It opened about a month ago on Main Street in New Rochelle, bringing cheap and delicious bibimbap ($8.95), finger-lickin’-good hot and sour Korean fried chicken ($9.95), and about seven other dishes (conveniently pictured and described on large laminated cards), including bulgogi, short rib or chicken kalbi, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), and udon (which, while it doesn’t contain a lot of stuff, won my heart with several kinds of fish balls).

Don't let its humble appearance deceive you—this chicken is packing some serious flavor.

Imported cinnamon tea adds a traditional touch to your meal.

And how’s this for a deal: the $5.95 lunch special (from 11:30 am to 3 pm) includes your choice of meat (including that crispy, sticky fried chicken), mixed vegetables (a few kinds to choose from), rice, and soda or bottled water. A refrigerator case holds the odd fruit cup and a few canned drinks, including the cinnamon tea often brought to you after a meal at a Korean restaurant, topped with floating pine nuts. At this unassuming luncheonette-type place, the pine nuts are BYO.
