Moonshine in Westchester: Where to Get It

Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery is our latest fancy, and should be yours too.

Buzzed

Moonshine, the once outlawed Appalachian backwoods cornmeal- and fermented yeast-whiskey (legal to distill in Tennessee since 2009) and probably the best-nicknamed spirit (catdaddy, donkey punch, hillbilly pop, hooch, jump steady, kickapoo, ruckus juice, white dog) has been growing in Cool Factor ever since actor Johnny Knoxville brought a jar to an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2010. Eastern Tennessee is home to several “legit” moonshine distilleries, including Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery, which opened in 2010 in Gatlinburg and sold approximately 3 million jars in 2013.

Yes, say it in your best hillbilly-speak: Well I’ll be, that’s a lotta hooch!

Ole Smoky buys its corn from local (Tennessee) farmers and packages its shine in rad Mason jars. Lucky for us Westchester Yanks hankering for a lick of catdaddy, it’s available for about $25 in 19 county locations including Westchester Wine Warehouse and C&S Wine Liquors in White Plains, Elmsford Wine & Spirits, Destination Wine & Liquor in Tarrytown, Four J Wine & Liquors in Ardsley, and Rose Hill Wines & Liquors in Thornwood.
