Little Pizzas With a Big Purpose

Founders and restaurateurs, Brad Nagy and Angelo Viscoso, created the Little Box Pizza food truck based on their passion for great pizza and a big heart for people. Each mobile pizza kitchen is designed to be operated by a deserving, hard working individual in need of a chance to make their future brighter than their past. For the first location, which is in Stamford on Bedford Street, that individual is James Gibson.

Gibson grew up in southern Connecticut and lived a life filled with gangs, jail time, as well as loss and personal pain. With a family to support, Gibson became determined to end the cycle. Although he worked hard at full-time jobs, Gibson found himself underemployed and struggling to make ends meet. Then, Nagy and Viscoso came along.

“We taught him the business from the ground up,” says Nagy. “He has all the skills, motivation, work ethic, and character. He just needed a hand-up, not a hand-out.”

When asked about the future plans for Little Box Pizza, Nagy says “we are setting this up to be a socially driven franchise model — something that we can repeat easily. It’s a ‘business in a box’ that can be used by someone who needs an opportunity. We hope to create many opportunities for people.” (Little Box Pizza is considered to be a Benefit Corporation, a type of legal entity that designates a for-profit business as having a social mission.)

What makes Little Box Pizza special, besides the people who make the pizza, is the use of honest ingredients, like hormone- and antibiotic-free cheese and meats. The dough is made fresh daily from a blend of finely milled flours and the sauces and dressings are free of artificial flavors, colors, and high-fructose corn syrup.

While you can create your own custom pie, worth trying are the spinach and artichoke as well as the carne, topped with sweet sausage, meatball, pepperoni, mozzarella, and tomato sauce. Meatball sliders, hearty salads, and fresh stuffed cannoli — classic, mochaccino, salted caramel flavors — round out the menu.
