Where to Eat in Westchester Before Heading to a Knicks or Rangers Game

Before heading to Madison Square Garden for game day, dine at one of these local restaurants near our Metro-North stations.

‘Tis the season for sports in New York! We can feel the excitement in the air after the Liberty clinched the WNBA championship earlier this month and as the Yankees battled it out in the World Series. While we love celebrating our championship-winning teams, New Yorkers remain loyal to our less victorious organizations (yes, we’re looking at you, Jets).

But hope is on the horizon. Our beloved Rangers and Knicks are making a comeback this year with a refreshed lineup that aims to bring us back to the playoffs for a second consecutive season. Be sure to secure your tickets to a Knicks or Rangers home game for the ’24-’25 season. During the game-day excitement, be on the lookout for stadium organist Ray Castoldi, who will be orchestrating the crowd from the rafters.

Dining

On game day, before hoping onto the Metro-North, give yourself extra time to grab a drink or bite to eat at a local restaurant near your station. Here are our recommendations.

Hudson Line

Starting up in Peekskill, check out The Central for a bistro lounge with standout food and a “bar car” that opens for drinks at noon from Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Near the Croton-Harmon station, grab a pre-game drink at The Green Growler. The taproom offers a wide selection of brews on tap and is located at the station’s parking lot entrance. Near the Tarrytown train station is RiverMarket Bar and Kitchen, an ideal space for groups looking for a sit-down dinner option.

One stop south in Irvington are two nearby restaurants, Sambal for Thai and Malay cuisine, and MP Taverna, which serves up Greek cuisine. If Dobbs Ferry is your station, Hudson Social is the way to go for a drink, shareable plates, or a full meal. Our last stop on the Hudson Line, Hastings-on-Hudson, would bring us to Maud’s Tavern for a classic brew and burger before heading to MSG.

Harlem Line

Starting up north on the Harlem Line, The Whitlock is steps away from the Katonah station and ideal for a cozy French onion soup and cocktail before your ride into the city. In Mount Kisco, check out Locali Pizza Bar & Kitchen, where handcrafted pizza and pasta are the stars of the menu. Pleasantville has ample food options for your crew, but we would recommend Pubstreet, a cozy pub with an always fresh oyster bar.

In Valhalla, a 1910 B&O caboose and 1896 Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway car make up a homey atmosphere and favorite dining spot for locals. Valhalla Crossing serves up lunch and dinnertime burgers, beers, large salads, and wraps. Last on our list is Whistling Rail, a speakeasy next to the Bronxville station. The speakeasy is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 5:30 p.m. until 11:15 p.m. If you’re headed to an earlier game, check out the space’s sister café, BXVL Coffeehouse, for fruit smoothies, pressed sandwiches, and a caffeine boost.

New Haven Line

If you’re taking the train into Manhattan from Mamaroneck on the way to a Knicks or Rangers game, give yourself time to stop by Modern on the Rails. This historic Metro-North building was turned into a family-owned and -operated Italian American restaurant.
