We would like to apologize in advance to all daters, diners, and Tinder swipe-righters: There’s yet another reason for your significant other to beg you to take them to Kanopi in White Plains.
Chef Anthony Gonçalves has just been nominated as a 2023 James Beard Award semifinalists for Best Chef: New York State. Kanopi offers its customers a top-level culinary experience featuring Portuguese farm-to-table dishes. Located 42 floors up in The Opus, Westchester, the restaurant invites visitors to dine alongside picturesque views of the New York City (and Westchester!) skyline.
Chef Gonçalves creates chef-led tasting menus accompanied by boutique wine parings. The team captures the essence of Portugal while dishing out seasonal plates with ingredients produced right here in the Hudson Valley.

The James Beard Foundation ushered in the start of “Beard season” with the release of the 2023 Beard Award semifinalists, featuring restaurants from across the nation competing for accolades in categories from Best New Restaurant to Outstanding Bar Program. The winners, chosen by judges from thousands of entries, will be announced June 5 at a gala at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, where the awards ceremony has taken place in the past.

While a Westchester eatery being nominated for a Beard Award, one of the most prestigious honors of the industry, is a cause for celebration, it’s worth noting that a number of local figures have graced the lists in the past. Dale Talde, chef at Goosefeather, and Eric Gao, chef at O Mandarin, were nominated last year for Best Chef. Peter Kelly, executive chef of X2O Xaviars on the Hudson, has been nominated for Best Chef Northeast and, as recently as 2017, Blue Hill at Stone Barns was a semifinalist in the outstanding service category.
Try not to blame us if your pockets run dry trying to see what the fuss is all about.
