This Hudson Valley Breakfast Box Is a Tasty Gift for Food Lovers

Three women-owned businesses in the Hudson Valley and Westchester team up to prove breakfast is the best meal of the day.

Santa is coming to the Hudson Valley this year and bringing something even better than a new bike or the hottest tech gadget: a breakfast box that’s sure to convert even the Scrooge-iest of Scrooges and the “I don’t eat breakfast”-iest of people who take a pass on what’s arguably the best meal of the day.

In this case, Santa just happens to be three Westchester-area woman business owners.

Denise Weale of Croton’s Dam Good English Muffins, Elina Dart of Peekskill’s Big Bang Coffee Roasters, and Jennifer Mercurio of Garrison’s Eleanor’s Best are joining forces to create a gift box perfect for the most important meal of the day, or any time of the day for that matter.

Weale’s all-natural handmade vegan sourdough white and multigrain English muffins; Mercurio’s locally-sourced, small batch strawberry jam; and Dart’s fair-trade smooth breakfast blend are a powerful combo to match any assemblage of superheroes you’re used to seeing on the big screen this time of year.

As for how the box came to be, Weale sold next to each of the women at farmers’ markets in the area, and the three had been looking to collaborate for some time. With a new production facility and a shipping infrastructure for her preservative-free English muffins, Weale saw an opportunity to finally team up with her fellow champions of breakfast.

“I just thought they’d be the perfect matchup and they’re both local,” she says. The box includes two varieties of Weale’s vegan, sourdough muffins, which are griddled in avocado oil and can be toasted for a perfect crunchy outside and chewy inside. The white is her “dam” good take on the classic English muffin with a subtle sourdough tang, while the new multigrain variety is a heartier bite with oat and nutty notes. Any muffins left over when the jam jar’s been licked dry are great with cheese or butter melted into their lovely nooks and crannies.

The English muffin experience begs to be turned into a jam session with a nice hearty spread of Eleanor’s Best strawberry jam. The family recipe takes locally grown fruit and (to use the technical term) smooshes it into a smooth, naturally sweet, and delicious spread that puts your run-of-the-mill, store-bought preserves to shame. (Set aside a couple of tablespoons to mix with water or maple syrup to make a gratifying glaze for pork chops or ham steak.)

Wash it all down with a cup of Big Bang coffee, which uses organic fair-trade beans roasted fresh to do good for the world and the taste buds. The smooth, nutty Supernova Breakfast Blend is the last stellar component of this breakfast extravaganza.

The box, which is available year-round, makes for an excellent gift for lovers of breakfast and/or haters of reading manuals. Fortunately, the instructions for this product are pretty simple. As Mercurio says, “They’re probably going to want to dig into a good English muffin, whip up some good coffee, and have a big schmear of jam on it, and it’s delicious.”
