For a restaurant open less than a year, The Boathouse has the well-worn look and feel of a neighborhood hangout that’s been around for decades. Tucked away off an outlying road near the Ossining train station, The Boathouse lives up to its name—boaters can literally glide into the restaurant’s personal dock, park their boats, and step inside for a hearty meal of seafood, steaks, burgers, and salads.
Decorated in a playful nautical theme, the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere attracts customers from all over Westchester for a simple reason: “Good food, varied menu, and reasonable prices,” says Scott London, one of The Boathouse’s co-owners. During the warmer months, diners can enjoy the river view at the patio tables. In high demand, outdoor seating is first come, first served. Reservations are taken inside for parties of six or more.
Among the appetizers to try: fried calamari ($9.95) served with roasted tomato sauce and Cajun mayonnaise, and the vegetable nori crisp ($8.95)—marinated vegetables rolled in seaweed, lightly battered and deep fried.
Favorites on the dinner menu: shrimp Luciano ($19.95)—shrimp with lemons and garlic butter (also available as an appetizer), rib eye steak topped with blue cheese ($29.95), and the decadent bacon, tomato, and Monterey Jack-stuffed burger ($12.95).
Dessert offerings include an Oreo cheesecake ($6), apple raspberry pie ($5.50), and chocolate crêpes ($6).
Following their meals, many customers stroll down to the water’s edge to take in the scenery. The Boathouse is also home to a lively bar scene of mostly local 30- and 40-somethings. The bar stays open later than the restaurant—until 2 am on Friday and Saturday nights.
Next year the restaurant plans on opening a tented waterfront patio, able to host private parties of up to 100 people.
According to London, The Boathouse has already gained a loyal following, with many regulars coming in to eat two to three times a week.
