Sandy Closes Waterfront Restaurants – Many Restaurant Workers Won’t Be Getting Paid This Week: Here’s What You Can Do to Help
The post-Sandy Facebook pictures from Irvington’s Chutney Masala say it all: Dishes, pots, pans, swirling in silty, Hudson River water. The story is the same at Dobbs Ferry’s Half Moon, Irvington’s Red Hat on the River, Hasting’s Harvest on Hudson. Restaurants all along the river are shuttered for what may be a long, arduous cleanup.
While our thoughts are with the restaurant owners who will be stuck with Sandy’s tab (in the cash-strapped offseason, no less), I can’t help thinking about those at the lowest point of the industry pay scale. Many busboys and dishwashers simply won’t get be getting paid while restaurants are shuttered, which is a real hardship for some of these most economically vulnerable workers.
Here’s what you can do to help.
Follow your favorite riverside restaurants on Facebook or call periodically to check in. Then, when the flooded restaurants come back online, make it a point of spending your dining dollars there. Eat. Drink. Tip a few extra percentage points. Do what you can to can to keep these vulnerable restaurant workers afloat in the storm.
