The latest new way to imbibe without booze is hop water—a zero-calorie, sugar-free sparkling beverage infused with hops. Though they have a beer-like aroma and hoppy flavor, craft-brewed hop waters don’t contain malt or yeast, so they are naturally gluten-free.
These sips offer health benefits too: The hop flower contains anti-inflammatory properties and has been considered a medicinal plant since the Middle Ages. Some producers infuse their brews with extracts like ashwagandha, a shrub known to relieve stress; L-Theanine, an amino acid found primarily in tea, which may improve concentration and sleep quality; vitamin C; or adaptogens (plant extracts that can enhance muscle stability and are said to reverse the effects of cell damage) and nootropics, which are thought to boost brain function.

Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, NY, has been crafting a Belgian-inspired hop water for about a year with its farm-grown hops. Although hop water can be enjoyed on its own, brand manager Jordan Egbert says it also works well as a mixer in cocktails and mocktails. He adds that hop water has gained popularity among “zebra stripers” who like to “have a beer, have a water, have a beer, have a water” to cut back on alcohol consumption.
Hop water is sold in cans online, at wine and beverage stores, including Half Time in Mamaroneck, and at Wegmans and other grocery stores.
