Sweet Ascent is the newest passion project of owner Frank Vazquez, and is also the most recent addition to The Peekskill Central Market, one of the latest businesses at the renovated retail/performance venue. One of the oldest masonry building in Westchester dating back to 1836, 900 Main Street’s previous iterations include a telegraph office, a Union soldier recruitment center, a hardware/gun-smithing shop, and a glass company.
This cozy shop’s wooden shelves and glass jars are chock-a-block with anything and everything you could possibly imagine in the world of sweets: from gummies to gumballs, Pixy Stixs to malted milk balls, Hot Tamales to Pop Rocks. It’s hard not to feel as if you’ve been sucked into the world of Willy Wonka as you gaze upon the wall-to-wall assortment. All the treats are for sale by weight, making it easy to grab a variety of items if you’re having trouble deciding.
The elegant and imaginatively decorated space brings about a sense of joy that is sure to spark nostalgia. The candy shop décor is original, with a quasi steampunk aesthetic featuring items from the steam-powered machinery of the Victorian era including colorful locks and keys, metal clockwork instruments, and bowler hats equipped with miniature goggles. Its beauty and creativity instills a sense of wonder and whimsy as you peruse the buckets and jars of candies and confections.
