Chris Vega doesn’t want you to have a meal — he wants you to have an experience. The former part owner of Riverdale’s Tortoise & Hare is bringing over a decade of restaurant experience up north, and with it an invigorated sense of what the county needs.
With thousands of hours clocked in front of and behind the kitchen line, Vega didn’t hesitate when constructing his dishes — simple, to the point food, and a sweeping variety. “The menu was inspired by reimagined classics and American comfort food,” he says. “I wanted items that will inspire guests to come back and try something new each visit.” What does the crossroads of creativity and no nonsense look like? The Pig & Fig flatbread, decorated with figs, smoked mozzarella, bacon, wild arugula, and fig balsamic glaze, a four-cheese mac speckled and sealed with crisp freshly baked cornbread, and a classic and crispy double smashburger for a big bite of Americana.
For the brave souls still glued to their New Year’s resolution who may want to skip out on a good time at the sight of cheese pulls and fried fare, the grilled shrimp grain bowl is a medley of quinoa, brown rice, and veggies that skimps on the lactose but not the generous seasoning.
An important part of The Getaway Car’s rotating cocktail program is the inclusion of fresh fruit. “It’s what I appreciate in the build of a cocktail I’m drinking,” says Vega. “I wanted the bar menu to feel light against the rich foods.” Affectionally referred to as “craftails,” the sultry sips are served in delicate glassware to the tune of names like Keep It Running (Belvedere vodka, fresh strawberries, lemonade, Champagne float) and Shinebox (black tea bourbon, lemon, raspberry liqueur, Earl Grey bitters, bourbon cherries).
A calling card of the true Getaway Car experience will be their barn door busting-brunch, spotlighting fun fare like bottomless mimosas, biscuits and country gravy, and disco Tater Tots. To contradict Taylor Swift’s song of the same name, everything good starts in The Getaway Car.
