A big New York high-five went up when Pete Wells (The New York Times restaurant critic) declared, “Don’t Mess With My Bacon, Egg, and Cheese.” But if anyone’s tampered with it to good effect, it’s Garden Catering (with locations in Mamaroneck and Port Chester), where you’ll find the one and only Hotsy: bacon, egg, and cheese, plus chili and home fries or potato cones (which are kind of like tater tots).
Now, hear me out. This isn’t any chili—it’s the 1944 recipe of Frank “Hotsy” Bertino, who was a legend at Garden’s first location in Greenwich, working into his 90s. I am the last person who wants chili in my breakfast sandwich, so trust me when I tell you it’s great (and spicy, too)—or trust the line that forms on Saturday mornings for this $4.50 hangover cure, which can also be had as a wrap.
As for the home fries, they make perfect sense to buffer the chili. If you want potato cones, ask for them (the default seems to be home fries), but their glorious nuances are lost here. Go ahead and get them, on the side.
