We’re not all-in on superstitions, but we like any excuse to return to our local favorite foods. In most years, Friday the 13th happens twice a year, but in 2026, it occurs three times.
Considered an undesirable date for centuries, this date has inspired two mouth-twisting terms to describe the fear of this supposedly unlucky day: paraskavedekatriaphobia and friggatriskaidekaphobia.
Given that Friday the 13th comes around more than once a year, it can’t hurt to add some possible good luck to the day, especially if the solution is this delicious.
Cornbread
This sweet bread that often accompanies barbecue is the color of gold, which symbolizes wealth. Up those chances by trying Best of Westchester winner Br’ers BBQ, a Bedford Hills newcomer that’s primarily a takeout spot, although you could try your luck at the two or three small tables onsite. This cornbread comes in a shareable block that you can cut into however many servings you need. Get it with chili, brisket, pulled pork, or fried chicken for a meal that’s bound to put some pep in your step.

Greens
What’s also the color of money? Those dark leafy greens are like cash money for your health. Pick a nutrient-dense variety, like spinach, in either a cold salad or cooked dish. At Shiraz Kitchen & Wine Bar in White Plains, try the spinach dip for a Persian take on this lucky veg. This dip is almost deconstructed, as fresh, steamed spinach has its flavor turned up with garlic and onion, then crowned with a big dollop of thick yogurt.
Ring-Shaped Foods
Across several cultures, ring-shaped foods are thought to bode well, as they symbolize coming full circle and continuity — and that’s good…well, if you liked where you were at on that starting point. You could do onion rings or fried calamari, but to start your day off with good luck, go for a bagel or doughnut. Pick up bagels at Bagel Emporium, an 11-time Best of Westchester winner with locations in Armonk, Chappaqua, Port Chester, Tarrytown, Yorktown Heights, and, this fall, Scarsdale.

Or travel the sweeter ringed route with a doughnut instead and try The Campfire or Nutella & Chill flavors at Grey’s Donuts in New Rochelle. When it comes to cake versus yeast, we’re team yeast for the light, pillowy experience.

Soba
These buckwheat noodles are popular in Japan and symbolize long life, but only if you slurp them up without breaking or chewing them. At the small and cozy Fujinoya Restaurant in Hartsdale, there are five soba dishes to choose from: three hot soba soups and two chilled sobas with dipping sauce.
