New Yorkers have long gloated about their Magnolia Bakery cupcakes, but now Westchester residents can join in the fun with the arrival of Flour & Sun Bakery in Pleasantville. The first and only cupcake bakery in Westchester, Flour & Sun has become an instant hit, serving up freshly-made batches of these addictive desserts.
The bakery is the brainchild of Denise Treco, Director of Marketing at the Jacob Burns Film Center, just down the street. A longtime cupcake baker for her fellow film buffs, she pounced on the Washington Avenue space when it became available, painting the interior a bright and sunny yellow and decorating the walls with cupcake photos. Most of the business is grab-and-go, but there are chairs at the front counter for those who prefer to linger with their cupcakes while sipping one of the bakery’s gourmet teas or coffees.
Flour & Sun offers four classic cupcakes ($2.75 each)—including chocolate and vanilla—as well as several daily specials ($3 each). Among the most popular specialty cupcakes are cookies and cream, coconut, and red velvet, a distinctively reddish chocolate-based cupcake with cream cheese frosting.
For those seeking something more unconventional, there’s the peanut butter and jelly cupcake—peanut butter cake with jelly topped with peanut butter frosting, a swirl of jelly and chopped peanuts. Or try the Whopper, an homage to the classic malt ball candy—chocolate cake with chocolate chips, topped with marshmallow frosting and rolled in crushed Whoppers. And stay tuned for a Snickers cupcake, soon to come.
Flour & Sun’s website lists the store’s daily specials, and the bakery even has its own Facebook page where fans can view photos and discuss their favorite cupcakes. Special and large orders are available for parties, corporate events and weddings. Flour & Sun is open Tuesday through Sunday.
