If Mason Sandwich Co. had been open when during my “research” for Westchester‘s May 2016 cover story, they clearly would have been included. Which of their offerings would have made the cut? No clue. Of the ones we tasted, they were all worthy.
This Eastchester eatery is the brainchild of brothers Lou (formerly of Fortina and The Cookery) and George Brindley, who wanted to make better sandwiches than what was being offered in the area; stuff they like to eat, and ultimately a better version of popular fast-food sammies.
Of the five sandwiches we sampled—and all were outstanding—three earned high praise, the first of which being the crispy cod (beer-battered Chatham cod, red cabbage slaw, tartar sauce). The fish had a light, not greasy, but crisp exterior and was flaky on the inside. The slaw provided a good amount of added freshness and texture, and the creamy tartar slathered on top popped with flavor. This is a Filet-O-Fish on designer steroids.
Also awesome was their take on a common fast-food fried chicken sandwich. The Chickwich, as they dub it, is a crunchy-coated, thick and juicy chicken breast with a reduced and spicy (only slightly) maple syrup, and housemade pickles for vinegary tang. Chick-fil-A has nothing on this sweet and salty sammich.
However, the one Mason Sandwich Co. creation I incessantly come back to is their Big Mac mock-up known as the Mason Burger, boasting two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and tomato on a sesame seed bun. Boy, that sounds familiar, even nostalgic but it’s way, way better than its famous predecessor—juicy, meaty, and bolstered by bread holds up to the toppings. The Kennebec (Maine potato) fries served with it were properly salted and crisp, and made a nice accompaniment to mop up the special sauce dripping out the burger’s sides.
Aside from sandwiches, Mason serves salads, soups, and sides like beets with whipped goat cheese and shishito peppers. To drink, you can guzzle iced tea, cold brew coffee, lemonade, or fruit punch, all of which are made in-house. If you want something more substantial, milkshakes are available. Additionally, craft beer selections will be coming very soon.
Chef Lou told us he was planning on keeping some menu staples, but would be adding a few more sandwiches and to keep a look out for specials. Either way, this is an excellent new spot in the area, and even though there’d be a strong urge to return to your favorite selection time and again, trying something new on the menu on each visit is a must. Until next time, Mason Sandwich Co.
