What characterizes the fall season better than squash? From hearty butternut to sugary delicata and mild spaghetti, squash features centrally on the autumn menus at a number of Westchester County restaurants. Here’s where to find the gourd stuff nearby.
L’inizio
698 Saw Mill River Rd, Ardsley; 914.693.5400
This Ardsley restaurant is a local favorite for its seasonal Italian-inspired menu. It recently won our 2024 Best of Westchester award for house-made pasta, but its main courses equally deserve our acclaim. The fall dish we have our eyes on is the butternut squash cutlet parmigiana with smoked ricotta, marinara, and mozzarella. It’s a no-brainer to add the award-winning pasta on the side for an additional $4.

Piccola Trattoria
41 Cedar St, Dobbs Ferry; 914.674.8427
For a heartier meal, try the pappardelle con nocciole, which is one of this Italian eatery’s most popular dishes, and for good reason. The tender, house-made egg noodles are smothered in cream sauce and peppered throughout with roasted hazelnuts and chunks of butternut squash. The sauce may be delectable, but the squash provides a hint of sweetness that truly makes the dish a winner.

Expect a hearty variety of modern Italian fare here, from pasta to parmigiano. However, it’s the mouthwatering pear salad on the lunch menu that is a no-brainer. It features sliced pears and the star of the dish, fried delicata, served over baby arugula and topped off with shaved red onion, pecorino cheese, and a truffle-honey vinaigrette.
