Fall Dishes That “Squash” the Competition in Westchester

Westchester restaurants adapt their menus to quell our cold-weather cravings. Here are the goods on the gourd offerings at six eateries.

What characterizes the fall season better than squash? From hearty butternut to sugary delicata and mild spaghetti, squash features centrally on the autumn menus at a number of Westchester County restaurants. Here’s where to find the gourd stuff nearby.

L’inizio

698 Saw Mill River Rd, Ardsley; 914.693.5400

This Ardsley restaurant is a local favorite for its seasonal Italian-inspired menu. It recently won our 2024 Best of Westchester award for house-made pasta, but its main courses equally deserve our acclaim. The fall dish we have our eyes on is the butternut squash cutlet parmigiana with smoked ricotta, marinara, and mozzarella. It’s a no-brainer to add the award-winning pasta on the side for an additional $4.

Piccola Trattoria

41 Cedar St, Dobbs Ferry; 914.674.8427

For a heartier meal, try the pappardelle con nocciole, which is one of this Italian eatery’s most popular dishes, and for good reason. The tender, house-made egg noodles are smothered in cream sauce and peppered throughout with roasted hazelnuts and chunks of butternut squash. The sauce may be delectable, but the squash provides a hint of sweetness that truly makes the dish a winner.

Stone Fire

This fall, dine at Stone Fire, a cozy restaurant that serves up a neo-Italian menu in a rustic and relaxed atmosphere. In addition to its wood-oven pizzas and small bites, the eatery offers butternut squash gnudi. The gnocchi-like dumplings, or Italian pillows, are topped with a parmigiano sage butter sauce, dates, pepita, and amaretti crumble.

Tarry Tavern

27 Main St, Tarrytown; 914.631.7227

This local gem boasts two squashthemed options available for lunch and dinner. The first is a cozy fall squash soup topped with none other than toasted pumpkin seeds. The second is on the starter menu and is the burrata cheese plate accompanied with pumpkin jam and spaghetti squash.

Expect a hearty variety of modern Italian fare here, from pasta to parmigiano. However, it’s the mouthwatering pear salad on the lunch menu that is a no-brainer. It features sliced pears and the star of the dish, fried delicata, served over baby arugula and topped off with shaved red onion, pecorino cheese, and a truffle-honey vinaigrette.

104 Kraft Ave, Bronxville; 914.793.1313

Squash is a standout at this village staple. For dinner, try the ravioli zucca, which comes filled with pumpkin, butternut squash, sweet potato, and ricotta, all topped with brown butter, sage, and a whiskey sugar brulee.
