Eating London and Calcutta

Stamford has a diverse food scene but Viceroy Publik House brings something to the city’s culinary landscape that hasn’t been there before — a high-energy English pub setting with a menu full of strong Indian influences from a time in history referred to as the British Raj.

“Our goal was to simply create a style of restaurant and bar that spoke to the core values of a traditional English pub — historic influences and all,” says Eric Monte, music promoter and Stamford restaurateur. “Viceroy is the influence of Indian colonialism on British food.”

On the menu, Shepard’s pie, fish ‘n’ chips, Faroe Island salmon, and bangers ‘n’ mash share space with spicy vindaloo chicken wings, lamb madras, and samosas. If you go, try the Bombay Burger, a spiced ground lamb patty topped with the classics — lettuce, tomato, red onion, American cheese, a fried egg — and dressed in a ginger mint aioli. Another to look out for are the spicy vindaloo wings: fried chicken wings tossed in an Indian spice blend that has the right amount of kick to be subdued by the side of cilantro chutney.

Viceroy Publik House is located in a bi-level townhouse at 211 Summer Street. The car hood of a vintage Triumph Bonnet marks its entranceway. The street level dining room and bar is framed in carved mahogany wood and regal chandeliers, offering guests a quiet, intimate setting to enjoy their meal and libations. On the other hand, the Tiger Room — Viceroy’s second story alter ego and music lounge — offers guests a vivacious dining scene with live music.

Regardless of whether you go for dinner, or drinks and music, be sure not to leave without trying the banana split — grilled banana topped with gourmet ice cream, salted caramel, Viceroy sweet hot nuts, and house-made Chantilly whipped cream. The subtle enhancements to the classic dessert will leave you wanting more.

Viceroy Publik House is a solid addition to downtown Stamford’s Little Summer Street, an area known for its eclectic culinary offerings from Mexican to Moroccan and beyond. If you’re feeling less adventurous, opt for one of the English pub classics. Otherwise, take advantage of the menu items with the Indian influences. Not only are they rich in history, but also they are executed well.
