Chocolate Critters

Deliciousness comes in small boxes

You’ll feel like you’re walking into a small European shop at The Little Chocolate Company (99 Mill St, Greenwich 203-531-6190), a new chocolate confectionery opened by Belgium native Martine Coscia. Shop specialties include “critters,” chocolate clusters of fruit and nuts including raisin walnut and coconut macadamia ($8.99/5 oz), as well as her biscottini, miniature biscotti available in flavors such as hazelnut and lemon ($5.99/5.5 oz bag), and chocolate barks ($7.99/5 oz). Her chocolate comes from around the globe, e.g., Mexico (“It has more of a bitter flavor profile”), Ghana (“red berry notes”), and of course Belgium (a proprietary blend of chocolates from South America and Africa). The truffles are creatively decorated with luster (that’s, edible sparkling powder dust), each in colors that represent the flag of the chocolate’s origin. Her chalkboard menu lists all of her desserts, each written in Dutch, French, and English.

For two years, Coscia’s business functioned out of her Greenwich home, selling to farmers’ markets, wholesale clients, and special events such as weddings. She opened up the Mill Street shop to appease customers whom, she says, “wanted me to have regular business hours.”
