Just before Father’s Day last year, Elmsford’s Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. launched an unmatched partnership in the history of beer making: teaming up with local ice cream empire Carvel, the brewery crafted a dark and creamy chocolate stout dubbed “Fudgie the Beer” that was so delicious it sold out its entire run in a matter of hours. Now, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, the two giants in their fields are teaming up once again for a yet another festive pint you won’t soon forget.

Last year’s Fudgie the beer was brewed from Carvel brand chocolate crunchies and flavored with the same rich fudge that decorates a classic Fudgie the Whale ice cream cake. In keeping with that tradition, the two teams have worked together to create not just a single new beer, but two, in honor of Carvel’s other iconic cream creation, Cookie Puss (and his St. Pat’s alter ego “Cookie O’Puss”).

Cookie Puss Birthday Beer (7.5% ABV) is a milkshake IPA brewed with Carvel’s coveted vanilla ice cream and milk sugar, leading to a rich and creamy mouthfeel. From the other side of the cake, Cookie O’Puss (8% ABV) will also incorporate chocolate crunchies and fudge to produce a St. Patrick’s Day pastry stout, a darker quaff that’s a bit heavier with hints of cacao and roasted malt.
“As two born and bred New York brands, we couldn’t think of anything more important than coming together to launch something special during such a significant year for us,” says Carvel President Scott Colwell. “2019 marks Carvel’s 85th birthday, and as we look towards the future, we want to keep giving our loyal fans the opportunity to enjoy the tried and true Carvel treats they love, but with a new twist.”
Captain Lawrence founder Scott Vaccaro is equally excited about the renewed partnership. “Our collaboration with Carvel is something that we are having a lot of fun with — it’s also something that we take seriously as brewers.” He adds, “Our goal has been to create quality beers that our fans will enjoy, while also insuring we express the character of both Captain Lawrence and the Carvel cakes that inspire these new brews.”

Cookie O’Puss Pastry Stout will be available wherever Captain Lawrence is sold. Due to the recent government shutdown, however, Cookie Puss Milkshake IPA will only be available in New York State. It’ll be available more widely for Carvel’s 85th birthday celebration later this year, but in the meantime that’ll make it a bit easier for local residents to snag a batch of this limited edition brew.
Oh yes, there are still very much limited editions. As noted, last year’s Fudgie the Beer sold out in a matter of hours, and these two new brews are expected to go just as fast. How then can you get your hands on one?
Once again, Captain Lawrence will be accepting preorders for both beers for local pick-up. Preorders are open from Tuesday, February 19 until Wednesday, February 27 and pick-up will be available through Sunday, March 10.
