While many prefer red wine with most winter fare, I’ve found a number sensibly priced, locally available whites that not only mate well with cold-weather favorites but bring out subtleties in the flavor of the foods often overwhelmed by reds.

2018 Jordan Chardonnay ($31)

Showing a bouquet and taste of pears, peaches, and brioche, with a lemony finish, this wine makes an excellent accompaniment for roast chicken, broiled salmon, and cheese ravioli.
Find it:
Aries Wines & Spirits and Westchester Wine Warehouse in White Plains, and Stew Leonard’s Wine & Spirits in Yonkers.

2017 Ravines Dry Riesling ($18)

This New York Finger Lakes wine exhibits a bouquet and taste of peaches, green apples, and melons, with a bit of lime in its lively finish. Mate it with veal and pork, as well as mac ’n’ cheese.
Find it: Cross River Wine Merchant in Cross River, Varmax Liquor Pantry in Port Chester, and Suburban Wine & Spirits in Yorktown Heights.

2017 Chablis Billaud Simon Premier Cru Vaulorent ($45)

With its lemony taste, bouquet, and hints of honey in its finish, this wine makes an ideal accompaniment for bouillabaisse and other fish stews.
Find it:
Bedford Wine Merchants in Bedford and Zachys in Scarsdale.

2018/19 Villa Rosa Gavi di Gavi ($14)

This Northern Italian import sports a bouquet and taste of melons and pears, with notes of almonds. Serve it with cod, monkfish, and spicy tuna sushi.
Find it: Dodd’s Liquor City in Millwood and Rye Brook Wine & Spirits Shop in Rye Brook.

90+ Cellars Sauvignon Blanc ($10)

This bargain bottle from New Zealand — with a bouquet and taste of pineapple, passion fruit, and grapefruit, with a citrusy finish — marries well with hearty fare, like mushroom risotto, cassoulet, and couscous-based dishes.
Find it:
Vine & Co. in Bedford Hills, Station Plaza Wine & Spirits in Bronxville, and Wine Bazaar in New Rochelle.
